Shoe’s Reviewz – Post race report

Thanks to Alan for his reviews of the following distance and trail events in our area!

Salem lake 30k trail run, Winston-Salem, September 25

  • 18.7 miles around Salem Lake. Trail is mostly rolling hills, wide, not rooty or rocky.
  • Well supported and fills up real quick. Recommended. Great training run for oct-nov marathons.

Ridge to Bridge marathon- Morganton Oct 30th

  • Very well organized and run small marathon. Only 300 runners. It’s a point to point run that starts at 4000′ and ends at 2000′. This run has a 9 mile down hill section, which will take it’s toll on your quads later on.
  • 1st 6 miles was on paved roads, all the rest on very scenic forest trails.
  • Lots of post race food (BBQ, hamburgers,Pizza). Soak your feet in the river afterward. Overall a good experience. Recommend it.
  • The run was held during black bear hunting season, so you get to see the occasional annoyed bear hunter on the trail, no bears.

Little river Trail run- 10 miles. Durham  Jan 15th

  • Hilly, rooty, rocky trail run. Very well supported and run. Course is challenging with many short hills to climb.
  • Normally this race is very cold. 15deg at start in 2010. Balmy 30 in 2011. This was my 4th year running this race.

Pilot Mtn Payback, Pilot mtn  Feb 19th. 15 miles or 24 miles

  • Advertised as a heavy half, 15 miles and the full marathon is only (only ?) 24 miles. One word sums up this race – Hills.
  • This was an out and back. I did the 15 mile version. You ran through 6 creeks on the way out and 6 and the way back. This is run on forest trails, other then the creeks ya run/hope/jump thru. 15 miles had roughly 1700′ of climbing.
  • If you do the full, it’s more like 4500′ of climbing. You know it’s a hard run when you see the front runners walking up some of the hills. Run this race if you really like hills.

Tobacco Rd Marathon   March 20th Cary

  • Guess I was expecting some special, but this was actually pretty boring a run for me. It’s flat and runs on 3 miles on paved roads, 20 miles on tobacco trail, 3 miles paved roads.
  • 20 miles of the exact same scenery did not inspire me much.
  • Post race was lacking big time. When I finished (4:08) there was some bagels, cold pizza, bread and beer. Compared to Ridge to Bridge, this was a big let down both the race and post race. I doubt I’d do it again.

Virginia Creeper trail marathon March 27 (ran it 2010)

  • Very low key, no frills, no shirt marathon. Only accepts 100 runners and only cost $10. Fills up in July. Run entirely on the Va Creeper trail in Abingdon, VA (3 hours away).
  • You get a marble paperweight at a memento of the run. For the price, best bang for the buck. You run on the old railroad bed, cross over numerous rebuilt trestles and run along side a river for at least half the race. Relatively flat course but does have some long 2-3 grade climbs that will wear ya down.
  • Post race was lots of baked goods. Recommended.

Dupont Forest 1/2 Marathon, Brevard NC April 9th

  • This has to be the best place I run in with the rivers, creeks and all the waterfalls. This 1/2 marathons run on forest service roads. Gravel mostly. And since it’s in the mountains, it is a very hilly, sometime really steep, course. I believe ~1800 for the 13 miles. Another well supported small event.

Valentine’s Marathon Massacre Details

Congratulations to the MRC on a great showing at the St. Valentine’s Day Marathon Massacre Relay on February 14th, 2010. Fifty members and ‘friends of the MRC’ made up twelve four-person teams and one 2-person team. And we had a great crowd of family and friends out to support the group!

From Herbie and the Lovebugs’ to ‘Here for the Fabulous Hoodies’ we had costumes, cake and enthusiasm! A special thanks to Leon and Tammy for bringing the space heater and to Amanda for her amazing cake-baking skills.

Who is ready for next year?
